Get To Know Your Community: Moon Jelly Melts

Hello and welcome! Thanks for being here. Please introduce yourself.

Hey, we're Simon and Brendan of Moon Jelly.

Where did the name come from?

We both grew up here on the ocean in Midcoast Maine - The ocean and aquatic life have intrigued and amazed us both from a young age. We knew we wanted our brand to reflect that in some way.

How did you get started with cannabis?

Smoked it, liked it, and wanted to learn more. The deer ate our first outdoor attempts when we were 15 and 16, so we kept at it.

Favorite thing about cannabis?

The part of pheno hunting where you have jars to compare, and it's perseverance despite prohibition.

What is your current grow set up?

We are growing in an Arch Solar light dep greenhouse. We have plenty of equipment that allows us to grow year round in USDA Hardiness zone 5b. Including supplemental LEDs, dehumidifiers, humidifiers, modine heaters, and an evaporative cooling wet wall.

Inside the greenhouse we've got permanent raised beds that are home to the thousands of worms that do the hard work! The beds are watered with a Blumat system that provides plain water 24/7 based on moisture levels in the beds. During flower cycles we hand water living teas weekly.

For pest management we use beneficial insects in sachets. They are preventative and patrol our crops 24/7 looking for pests.

What drew you to living soil?

It just made sense. Utilizing the soil food web to grow cannabis is the path of least resistance, and at the end of the day the highest quality cannabis we'd experienced all had living soil as the medium in common.

When you focus on creating the right environment for a thriving soil food web, the rest is easy. Between every round we send soil samples to Logan Labs for analysis. Based on these results we amend our beds with soybean meal, insect frass, alfalfa meal, and organic certified minerals. We do not use any animal byproduct amendments.

It's cheaper, easier, and yields a higher quality end product.

You put a lot of thought into being eco-friendly. What should patients know about the massive energy requirements used by the cannabis industry?

Too many people overlook the energy usage of indoor grows. As anthropogenic climate change continues, it will become harder to justify such intensively wasteful practices, from a management perspective and financial one. If you're producing sub-par product in the most wasteful way, what are you really focused on?

The misconception of sun grown cannabis?

The most common thing we hear is that sun grown cannabis is dirty, moldy, and filled with bugs. This of course can be true of any cannabis that is grown without standards. When it's properly done with care, the sun is the secret ingredient for amazing, flavorful cannabis.

Your genetic line up is always interesting. What strains are you currently growing?

You can see our entire genetic library on our website (moonjellymaine.com/strains). We try to rotate those selections every grow cycle so we end up with a nice balanced menu

Growing in the greenhouse right now we have: Milk Monkey, Z Cube, Sour Fuel, Puro Loco, Moonbow, Slap ‘n Tickle, and Bomb Train. We are going to hang dry a nice portion of this round for flower, that will include Headband x Chem D, Sour Fuel, and Wedding Cake?. That will be ready to enjoy by mid December!

Any new strains patients can look forward to coming soon?

Yes! We are always hunting new genetics and looking for new and exciting flavors. We’ve got two pheno hunts planned for 2024. One will be focused on blueberry terps and one on lemon terps. That's all the info we’ve got for you now, more soon!

With so many low quality generic distillate edibles out there, I was extremely excited when I saw you recently added high quality hash rosin infused edibles to your line up, can you breakdown what you currently offer?

We offer three flavors of our hash chocolate dots regularly: Strawberry, Caliente and Espresso. We keep it simple and use the highest quality ingredients possible, even have been lucky enough to use local farms fruit like Beth's strawberries from Warren. Epic Cure Kitchen makes the edibles with his chocolate and our hash rosin, we've done special bonbon releases for events and are currently R&D'ing some new products for the edible side of Moon Jelly, stay tuned!

Do you offer direct to patient and where can patients find your products?

We are still just a two man team, doing everything from growing and processing to marketing and deliveries. Currently we do not have time for direct to patient meetups. Right now you can find our products at these shops:

Clouded Valley - York

Captains Cannabis - Sanford

Kind Guy - Biddeford

Green Truck - North Berwick

The Market 207 - Westbrook

House of Hash - South Portland

Hazy Hill - Portland

Rugged Roots - Auburn

Imperial Connection - Bangor

Will you guys be at any events / sessions in the coming future?

We are aiming to make it to an event around December/January for our flower drop - As of right now we do not have anything planned. Stay up to date by signing up for our email list (sign up here: moonjellymaine.com/retail-locations).

Closing thoughts / feel free to add anything else

We are beyond thankful for all the support and love we receive from the cannabis community. Thank you all so much for allowing us to do what we love daily!
