Hello and Welcome! Thanks For Being Here And Letting The Community Get To Know You Better!
Thank you for the invite! It’s an honor to participate. Due to cannabis arrests in the past, I’ve been lingering in the shadows of the cannabis community for years. Owning and operating my own business in this industry is something I wasn’t sure would ever happen to me in my lifetime.
Where Does Your Name Come From?
My mom’s name was Rory. She was one of my biggest supporters next to my wife and kids and was always rooting for me. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with her third bout of cancer in 2021 and passed away in July of that year. While she was battling her cancer she took RSO daily which helped with her pain and appetite. Amazingly enough, it enabled her to eat up until the day she passed despite the cancer moving into her stomach. I started Rory Farms to honor her memory because, without her, none of this would be possible.
How Did You Get Involved With Cannabis?
I’ve had a love of cannabis since high school. At first, I took up smoking as a way to fit in. I was the only freshman on the varsity lacrosse team at my high school and of course, you’re going to do what all of the cool juniors and seniors are doing. But after some time I realized cannabis wasn’t just a trend — it was a great solution for my anxiety. It helped me feel more at ease in social situations and became a real source of comfort for me during my late teenage years.
You Have A Long History With Cannabis, Can You Explain What It Was Like To The People Who Don't Come From That Era?
At the risk of sounding too much like an old man, things were different for us growing up then they are for kids nowadays. Obviously, back in the early 2000s, cannabis was not legal. Its reputation was poor, especially among authority figures. Where I grew up, if you were identified as a cannabis user, you’d often be harassed and targeted by local law enforcement. For example, one time in high school, I met up with a few buddies to smoke late at night. We parked the car and I rolled up a blunt which we smoked at the park. By the time we walked back to the car, the police were already waiting for us.
Because of the legality issues, there wasn’t a cannabis industry as we know and understand it today. I was getting my product from a friend who was getting it from someone growing it themselves. The product wasn’t always the best — lots of stems and seeds, sold as brick weed. After I got to know more people who loved cannabis, I finally sourced my product from a grower who was selling stuff almost as good as it is today. My friends and I used to go into New York to Washington Heights to get “haze” or “piff” which was the best product you could find back then.
What Is Your Favorite Thing About Cannabis?
Definitely the healing aspect. Cannabis has helped so many people I know personally with pain ailments and mental health issues. I think it’s pretty incredible how one plant can have so many different benefits for so many different people. I also really love the cannabis community, especially up here in Maine. For the most part, everyone shows love and support to each other, and especially with the way the world is today, I think that’s pretty awesome.
What Is Your Current Grow Setup?
We actually just finished up our most current project and now have a 200 square foot veg room and a 200 square foot flower room. In the veg room, we have three 720-watt Grower’s Choice LED lights and six 720-watt Grower’s Choice LED lights in the flower room. In each room, we use a Quest dehumidifier. In the flower room, we grow in no-till living soil beds with an old-school Clackamas Coot soil recipe. In the veg room, we have 15 different strains. The flower room has three currently, but we’re planning to add more on a rotational basis. This will allow for more consistent releases in the future.
We also have a lab-grade cold room used for washing and processing hash. We wash in two 30-gallon stainless steel vessels with ice extract bags and use a Harvest Right freeze drier and a 10-to n Sasquach Pro-Series rosin press.
What Should Patients Know About Living Soil Vs Other Growing Practices?
Living soil closely mimics the soil that exists in nature. It’s the most organic way of growing cannabis. I usually just feed my plants with water and every two weeks, give them a beneficial microbial feed. This allows the microbes in the soil to do all of the work instead of needing to give the plants a nutrient cocktail like you would with salt-growing. The terpenes in the plant are expressed more naturally and the plant genetics can speak for themselves, instead of using plant growth regulators to do their job.
What Strains Are You Currently Running?
We are currently running Guava Tangie, Oreoz, Cereal Milk, and Titty Sprinkles. Our full menu is updated regularly at: https://www.roryfarmsmaine.com/menu.
Any New Strains Coming Soon?
We have some clones getting ready for the flower room in a few weeks. These will all be washed for hash. They include Bag Clogger, Sour Sop, Tres Leches, Guama, AJ’s Nevada, and Apples and Bananas. We also have some seeds starting to veg out and those include GMO, Monkey Berries, Tropical Runtz, Rainbow Reserve, and Karl Malone.
On Top Of Offering Medical Products You Also Offer Solventless Processing?
Yes, that‘s correct! We offer split solventless processing or toll solventless processing for caregivers or patients. We have a few openings left, but the fall is looking pretty booked. If anyone is interested in solventless processing they can contact us on Instagram @roryfarms or on our website at roryfarmsmaine.com.
Things To Look Forward To In 2023 And Beyond?
We’re really excited about the remainder of 2023. We continue to grow our business through collaborations and networking in this great community. We’re also hoping to enter some competitions and attend local events this year and next.
