One Hitter Report: Moldy Contaminated Recreational Cannabis Recalled Again

Written By: Dillon Cate

Today’s one hitter report is an unfortunate report, the Office of Cannabis Policy has announced for the second time in less than a month that there are contaminated recreational Cannabis products on the market that have “passed” the initial mandatory testing. Which truly begs the question how did the products pass the inspection in the first place?

The products affected were recalled for Microbials along with Yeast & Mold and were all grown by Nova Farms and the strain was Frosted Cookies sold in 4 packs of blunts, various pre roll packages up to a 56 pack of pre rolls and you cannot make this up but also a pre ground flower under another label they proudly call “Midz.” The products were sold at 14 different Adult Use Recreational shops located throughout the state of Maine all the way from Portland to Presque Isle from September 17th to October 8th.

Imagine this, in the 21 days of the moldy contaminated products being sold at 14 different shops throughout the state. If each of the 14 shops that sold the contaminated product sold to 5 customers a day that’s nearly 1500 people being affected and sold contaminated products.

Now I want you all to take a moment and ask yourself something. Did you see any whole flower being recalled? No, because these companies have now convinced you into buying products without ever seeing what they are made of. Instead, they broke the moldy flower down into pre rolls, and pre ground flower to hide from you what it truly looks like. When was the last time you looked inside a pre-roll?

Consumers of the contaminated products were told to consult a physician if they consumed the products and are experiencing symptoms or adverse reactions. However, this begs the question of how many consumers are going to actually find out about this recall? I checked the social media of several of the 14 retailers and didn’t see a single post about it. I didn’t see anywhere of OCP having a policy of having Recreational Shops having to inform customers know about the contaminated products, so it seems like the customers are going to go back in and continue to buy more “convenient” products never being truly informed.

We have already covered OCP admitting that they are fully aware that Cannabis growers are using industry secrets like remediation in the form of radiation to “treat” their cannabis in order to pass the mandatory test results. As well as taking moldy Cannabis flower and knowingly turn it into concentrates that will be sold unknowingly to consumers. No information is required to be disclosed to the consumer, whether it is in the medical or recreational market.

So, if there are mandatory tests for every recreational batch grown and product type of recreational Cannabis how did 8 different contaminated products all end up passing the mandatory testing? If this was only caught because of OCP’s compliance checks how many other moldy contaminated batches are out there on the recreational market? What consequences do producers of contaminated cannabis face and if so what? Perhaps a legal issue, monetary, or a revoke of the license.
